Each Manchester United kit is made out of at least 13 recycled plastic bottles. The design is inspired by the gingham print in a tribute to the famous fabric which powered the city of Manchester’s growth in the textiles industry. Launched under the motto ‘Made of Manchester’, the kit also pays tribute to the growth of Manchester United as a club founded by local railway workers to one of the best football clubs in the world. The shirt has the motto ‘Forged in industry, Striving for Glory’ printed on the inside of the collar, which captures the tradition represented by players during matches. Despite drawing criticism from football shirt fans, the checkered design is a true tribute to the city’s and the club’s history. The gingham fabric was first produced in Manchester in the mid-18th century. In modern fashion, gingham shirts have been produced by several well-known brands including Ben Sherman and Fred Perry. As happens with all shirts which are not a very big hit at first glance, fans of the club eventually buy the shirt when they watch the players wearing it on the pitch.
